Feasibility and acceptability of training community health workers in ear and hearing care in Malawi: a cluster randomised controlled trial

This cluster randomised controlled trial looked at the ability to train CHWs in Malawi to identify individuals with ear and hearing disorders. The intervention and training were effective and could be scaled up to CHWs in other countries.

The potential of task-shifting in scaling up services for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV: a time and motion study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

This paper looks at the potential to shift prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV tasks from nurses to community health workers (CHWs). This study measures the time nurses dedicate to these activities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in order to estimate the potential cost savings of having CHWs take up these tasks. The paper found that task-shifting could allow nurses to focus on more specialized tasks, while reducing the average cost per patient. 

Improving local health through community health workers in Cambodia: challenges and solutions

Volunteer community health workers (CHWs) in Cambodia promote local health and act as a bridge between the public health system and the community. This article examines the obstacles CHWs face in Cambodia through qualitative research, which includes two focus groups and ten semi-structured interviews.

Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) in Guinea - Case Studies

Post Ebola, Guinea is rebuilding its health system to deliver higher quality care.  Part of their effort includes gaining trust again from the community, something that dwindled during the epidemic.  Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) is a five year initiative funded by USAID that is working to address these concerns.  HC3 utilizes a social and behavior change communication (SBCC) strategy to improve health behaviors and services in Guinea.

CHW Defies Culture and Encourages Women to Give Birth in Hospital

Lochuch, a CHW in Kenya, faces many challenges in her job as she tries to protect the health of those in her community.  She has dealt with angry husbands and ambulance denials;  actions that could lead to harm of pregnant women. Lochuch is working to ensure that women can deliver in a hospital.  This article details her personal experience overcoming barriers in her community and the resilience with which she and her co-workers advocate for their clients.
